This week we celebrate one of the leading lights and visionary women in the entrepreneurial space. Chelsea Evans is the brains behind award-winning and wildly successful ventures such as Plan My Wedding SA, among others. Hailing from Zimbabwe and spreading her brand reach across the region, she continues to shape the narrative of the entrepreneur with modern solutions.
Our Person of the Week has added another prominent feather in her decorated hat by starting an international incubator program in Zimbabwe called Ibuhub. The incubation program has a thrust towards identifying and bringing together Africa’s young entrepreneurs. These are then put into ‘a support ecosystem that grows technology and diverse innovation-centric start-up ideas into commercially viable ventures’.
“Ibuhub is there to facilitate and build African businesses and entrepreneurs into world renowned sustainable companies. I am motivated every day to tackle the day with great confidence and motivate people’s mindsets through my work specializing as a business strategist,” said Chelsea.
“I identify market gaps and innovative solutions to drive profit, incorporating social impact, empowering and equipping individuals to be the best version of themselves. It is a call I execute wholeheartedly as I’m very passionate about the start-up space,’’ she added.
Chelsea Evans is an assertive professional with impressive personal achievements and actively involved in empowering others. Her career highlights and achievements are vast and include features on Forbes 30 Under 30, Forbes Women, Disrupt Africa as well as Thriving Magazine among others.
The award winning entrepreneur has never been one to rest on her laurels and took their family business to new heights as Chief Operations Director. Yomilk became the largest commercial dairy project in all of Mozambique with its own cheese and milk factory. In between that and other projects, she also made an impact with The Meikles Foundation and grow her business network.
“My life is a bit of an African love affair really, coming from Zimbabwe, living in Mozambique and operating in South Africa! Starting Plan My Wedding and joining the family business is simply crossing another frontier,” she said. Using her experiences from an expansive professional portfolio, Chelsea Evans was motivated to see a change by supporting and mentoring entrepreneurs and businesses around the world.
“I remember looking for something that could combine everything I loved – creativity, business, travelling and people, in my career. I have always been dedicated to the startup and business ecosystem where I find herself based. I decided to combine my love for these, putting this into action by founding Plan My Wedding and the rest has been history.”
Her innovation knows no bounds and this resulted in her securing funding from Creative Counsel co-CEO Gil Oved and former Eurocar CEO Dawn Nathan Jones after pitching on the reality TV show Shark Tank South Africa. The hit reality show sees entrepreneurs pitch their businesses in front of a panel of business moguls willing to invest their own money and time in potentially lucrative business ideas. Chelsea did a great job and the result was the realization of Southern Africa’s first online wedding planning platform which allows couples to plan their entire weddings.
Couples are provided with smart diarized planning, practical guidance and inspiration, budgets, tools, checklists, their own personal dashboards and a wide selection of service providers to choose from.
“Our services come with a 24-hour support chat line and search engine filters. This allows couples to search for the exact supplier or vendor they are looking for within their specific price range. All these services are free, though there are paid options and extra packages to choose from. Vendors and suppliers can also sign up for free and showcase their services, with upgrade paid options available for them if they want to get more exposure and added benefits,” Chelsea explained.
Plan My Wedding South Africa has been a hit so far and with her vast knowledge in the International startup and business sector, Chelsea is already looking forward to the next innovation.
“I live by the motto ‘anything is possible if you set your mind to it.’ I always aim to live my life completely, honestly and compassionately – with a healthy dose of reality and a creative imagination.”
